Effective English learning steps for beginners
For English beginners, it can be said that the factors that determine the effectiveness of the process are Speaking - Listening - Grammar - Vocabulary, these are the essential foundations that help learners learn skills well while using English. Let's refer to the advice for learning English for beginners.
1. Learn from the basics – Learn Pronunciation
Vietnamese students are considered to have an easier time approaching and getting used to English because the Vietnamese alphabet is quite similar to the English alphabet. However, when learning English, Vietnamese people often have the habit of forgetting “ending sounds”. Even students who have studied English for many years still look for Pronunciation or Phonics courses to practice more accurate pronunciation, because that is an important foundation to help learners develop English speaking skills.
To practice good pronunciation, beginners should learn how to pronounce each syllable, vocabulary and sentence. Every day, you should spend at least 20 minutes practicing English pronunciation. Using reliable dictionaries such as Cambridge, Oxford or practicing with teachers and classmates is also an effective way.
2. English listening practice for beginners
When learning English, just learning pronunciation is not enough. To speak English well, you need to practice listening regularly. Research has shown that once you listen regularly, your brain will automatically absorb sounds and voices, and from there, you can get used to it better, even though you may not understand anything at first. Listen to English in every space and time you can, for example, listen to music in English, watch news in English, read books, watch movies in English.
3. Learn common vocabulary and learn the most basic grammar
Vocabulary is the first basic key to learning English. When possessing a rich vocabulary, learners will easily apply it effectively to listening, speaking or writing skills. Learn the most common English communication vocabulary and learn by topic. In addition, with each group of words they learn, you should practice immediately and continuously every time you come across an image related to that group of words.
Unlike Vietnamese grammar, English grammar will have many reversals of word positions in sentences. But think about the most effective way for you to learn, for example, instead of having to remember that English has 13 tenses, you should remember that there are only two groups of tenses: present/future and past, then branch out the tenses and you will remember them very easily.
What should beginners pay attention to when learning English?
1. Clearly define your goals
Setting goals for learning English for beginners is very important because only when you have specific and clear goals will you know what you need to do and how long it will take to achieve the level you want. For example, if you set a goal of being able to communicate well in English within 3 months, you need to spend about 120 minutes every day to review the appropriate skills. You do not need to review all four skills, but depending on which skill you need to develop more, spend more time on that skill. Or you can also alternately study Speaking and Listening skills or Reading and Writing skills every day. In addition, do not forget to plan to participate in English clubs on the weekend.
2. Find the right environment and study program
Many people often ask questions when starting to learn English, which curriculum should they follow, where to study, and how to study the fastest. Currently, there are many English centers as well as resources to support you in learning English effectively. Self-study, online study or studying at reputable centers are the most popular forms of study, in which studying at a center to have more opportunities to interact with friends and teachers is considered one of the priority options.
