From 1 September 2024, your Aptis ESOL certificate includes several updates.

There are also changes regarding certificate issue, if you do not achieve the minimum CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level assessed by the Aptis ESOL variant that you take.

A full qualification name is now displayed on the certificate. This includes a United Kingdom Qualification Level which corresponds to the overall CEFR level awarded to you when you take Aptis ESOL.

An Ofqual qualification number is also included on the certificate. This number also corresponds to the overall CEFR level awarded to you when you take Aptis ESOL.

The word variant has also been added under the name of the Aptis ESOL variant that you have taken.

Yes, there is also an update to the CEFR level that you will be awarded, if you have taken Aptis ESOL General or Aptis ESOL for Teachers and demonstrate a CEFR level above B2.

  • A CEFR level C1 is now awarded if you demonstrate a CEFR level above B2 in any of the four language skills assessed: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
  • An overall CEFR level C1 is now awarded if you demonstrate an overall CEFR level above B2.

Both updates replace the CEFR level C that was previously awarded.

Yes, C1 descriptors are now included in the CEFR skills descriptors on the reverse side of the certificate issued to Aptis ESOL General or Aptis ESOL for Teachers candidates.

These updates have been made in line with Ofqual requirements: Ofqual is the United Kingdom regulatory and recognition body that regulates Aptis ESOL.

Please find the illustration of the updates in the Downloads section below

Yes, Aptis ESOL certificates issued before 1 September 2024 have the same validity as certificates from 1 September 2024 onwards.

If you take Aptis ESOL and demonstrate an overall level below the CEFR levels assessed by the Aptis ESOL variant that you have taken, you will be issued a report rather an Aptis ESOL certificate.

This applies to you, if you take:

  • Aptis ESOL General / for Teachers and demonstrate a level below A1.
  • Aptis ESOL Advanced and demonstrate a level below B1.

The report will contain your name and your candidate details and will confirm that you have not demonstrated sufficient English language level in the four skills tested for an overall result and an Aptis ESOL international certificate to be awarded.

No. Within two years of the test date, we will continue verifying results and issuing additional certificates, as requested by test takers and Receiving Organisations, as published on our website (https://www.britishcouncil.vn/en/exam/aptis/results).

The format of Aptis ESOL does not change.
