Kids Read is an award-winning reading programme aimed at primary school children to encourage reading for pleasure both inside and outside the classroom. It started as a partnership between the British Council and HSBC in the Middle East in 2011 and came to Vietnam in 2015.
In Vietnam in 2015 we reached nearly 4,000 children at six primary schools in Binh Duong province, donated around 85 books to each school and ran three teacher training workshops and four competitions for students and teachers. There were also four community events, with support from 50 HSBC volunteers, including reading challenges to encourage students to read and teachers to incorporate stories in their teaching.
Kids Read 2016 was happening in Hanoi with three teacher training workshops on storytelling, three school visits to give teacher trainer demonstrations of storytelling lessons with grades 3, 4 and 5 students, observe and give feedback on storytelling lessons for participating teachers, two training workshops for HSBC volunteers on how to tell stories to children, three reading challenges, two competitions for teachers, two competitions for students, three community events and donated over 2,500 books to six participating schools.
This year, Kids Read 2017 is happening in Ho Chi Minh city with the participation of six primary schools selected by Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training in six suburbant districts including Cu Chi, Hoc Mon, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Binh Tan and Can Gio.
