Vu Duc Phuong was awarded GREAT scholarship 2025–26 and is currently a master's student in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Ulster University.
Why did you choose the UK as a study destination?
Since my dream career is to become a highly-qualified teacher of English, pursuing a Master's degree in the relevant field is essential. What makes this degree more special is the chance for me to study in the English-speaking country – the UK – which is also home to the English Language. In general, studying to become an English teacher in the country where this language is originated is the best option.
How was your feeling when received GREAT scholarship?
When receiving the GREAT Scholarship, I felt so proud of myself and all the work that I had been doing. This scholarship gives me a life-changing opportunity to study in the UK, making my dream job come true. Right now, I feel so glad and lucky because thanks to this award, I have now met and made new friendships, and I can also live here comfortably without worrying too much about finances.
What do you think about the study programme and educational environment in the UK?
Compared to other countries, a Master's degree in the UK is only one-year long, helping me to save time and cost when studying abroad. After studying here for one semester, I can see that despite valuable lectures, the learning environment in the UK mainly encourages independent study, requiring me to read books in advance and have great self-discipline to do the assignments.
What will be your plan after finishing this Master’s degree?
On completing the degree, I will be returning to Vietnam and starting a teaching career there. I will also use all skills that I would gain when studying in the UK (English learning skills, the spirit of self-study, etc.) to apply and teach Vietnamese students effectively.
What advice would you give to Vietnamese students who wish to apply for GREAT Scholarship?
I want to say that if you have identified your dream UK university and the career you want to pursue, just confidently apply for the scholarship. In the scholarship form, or if several universities require a brief video instead, you have to show your genuine passion and motivations to study for that particular programme. Additionally, you should try to specify how the knowledge in your chosen programme fit the career you want to pursue. Finally, you have to demonstrate how the UK or your chosen UK university will benefit when you are a student there.
