The British Council Teaching Centre in Ho Chi Minh City is seeking suitable candidates for the posts of Part-time English Language Assessment Tester. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in academic and customer service areas. The post holders will mark placement tests and interview students to make a correct assessment of English language levels for students. Academic training will be delivered to successful candidates.

Role overview

Language Level Assessment

Successful applicants will undertake a period of training which will consist of a series of meetings with a trainer, and an extensive series of observations of existing level-testers. Trainees will be invited to participate in oral interviews as they gain experience. Trainees will be accepted as level-testers when they consistently demonstrate the ability to:

  • accurately place students in appropriate language courses at different ages and level of English ability
  • provide clear detail on placement decisions in registration documentation
  • liaise with SCMEs and Academic staff on placement decisions and changes to procedure/documentation as required
  • represent the British Council as an expert user of English.

After appointment, level–testers will be required to undergo occasional monitoring by a supervising member of academic staff.

Customer care and support

  • Provide an exceptional level of customer service to all customers who come to the Teaching Centre to take a placement test 
  • Make customers feel welcome
  • Speak to customers in a polite and professional manner
  • Refer customers to Sales and Customer Management staff where appropriate 

Applicants should meet the following requirements

  • excellent level of English and Vietnamese (equal to IELTS 7.5 /Advanced and above; Speaking: minimum 7.0)           
  • good communication and organization skills
  • be flexible for at least ten hours of work per week (including Saturday/Sunday and evenings)
  • high sense of responsibility, dynamism, attention to details and customer-oriented 
  • ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and well-being of children
  • ability to demonstrate the British Council’s behaviours at essential level: working together, making things happen and being accountable. (For details please refer to the British Council’s behaviours)
  • ability to work as part of a team
  • ability to use MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Explorer).

Other requirements

  • Dress smartly and to set a high standard of personal appearance whilst on the premises so that a professional working environment is maintained
  • Clothing should be clean, in good repair and not scruffy
  • Vests, shorts, T-shirts and plastic flip-flops should not be worn on British Council premises
  • Clothing should not be too revealing 
  • Hair should be clean and tidy
  • Where practical, tattoos should be concealed by clothing
  • Suggested attire: 
    - Ironed long or short-sleeved shirt tucked into trousers, blouse or smart top
    - Pressed suit-style trousers, chinos, smart skirt or dress
    - Clean formal footwear 
  • Mobile devices should not be used in testing room
  • Maintain appropriate posture and professional bearing at all times
  • Absence should be noticed at least 24 hours in advance
  • Show up on time at the assigned premises.
