About this programme
Premier Skills combines the reach of the British Council with the global appeal of the Premier League to use football to develop a brighter future for young people around the world. Drawing upon the Premier League’s domestic expertise, it uses football to tackle a variety of community-based social issues such as health, disability, gender, inclusion and education.
Premier Skills has already had a tremendous impact in 20 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Since 2007 Premier Skills has created training opportunities benefitting 2,300 grassroots coaches and referees who in turn have reached more than 400,000 young people.
Since 2008 in Vietnam, we have established a strong relationship with the General Department of Sport and the Vietnam Football Federation to deliver this project. The project has also received great support from NGOs and schools across the country.
- train community coaches nominated by the Vietnam Football Federation and NGOs
- provide training opportunities for qualified coaches for development at a higher level so they can become Premier Skills coach educators
- encourage coaches from the programme to establish local football clubs supported financially by the Premier Skills Small Grant Offer, once they meet standard requirements
- use Premier Skills to promote Premier Skills English focusing on educating children with a foreign language and introducing online teaching materials designed by the Premier Skills team in the UK.
Since 2008, with strong support from our partners, Premier Skills has successfully trained 100 community coaches, 14 coach educators and 12 community referees. We have also helped to establish eight community football clubs and six football clubs in schools nationwide.
More than 100 grassroots coaches have so far participated in the programme and thousands of children have benefited including the disadvantaged, disabled, homeless and those from areas affected by natural disasters.
The Premier Skills project has been successfully delivered in 17 provinces across Vietnam. Thanks to the continued effort of the team, we hope to expand our activities in more provinces and create more opportunities for all children to access football activities across Vietnam in the near future.
We have also successfully organised Premier Skills English online competitions for teachers and high school students all over the country. Each year, the competition attracts an increasing number of participants.
